    Big Pitch

The Big Pitch this year will be promoted in January and the final Big Pitch Event will be down in Cardiff Bay in April 2013. Please see below details of Big Pitch. An email will be sent out to all staff detailing specific dates.

    Little / BIG PITCH

LITTLE PITCH Feeder to Big Pitch Event 2011

The Little Pitch is a college run initiative which will be the feeder to the Big Pitch Event which is taking place in Cardiff Bay.

This means the timescales are tight so the College Event will need to be advertised, and the groups selected from the proposals that the students have written on the business idea, which will be decided on shortly. (1 team needs to be selected from each of the campuses - Usk, Pontypool, Ebbw Vale, Crosskeys and Newport). These 5 teams will then be judged and two winning teams will be put forward for the Big Pitch Event. (There needs to be 4 students in each team).

These Events will also cover elements of Communication and the Tutorial Enrichment Programme for Enterprise / finance.

Click on the link below to watch the video of the cross college Little Pitch Event which took place on the 6th November 2011 at Pontypool Campus:-

    http://www.youtube.com/user/coleggwent?feature=mhee&v=RuualA1OE3k&lr=1

    BIG PITCH

The Big Pitch Event (ie: Apprentice) is taking place on 28th November 2011 at Pier Building, Cardiff Bay.

The Initiative is an excellent opportunity for students to take part in a real live project where they can gain a real flavour for the business world, while developing their entrepreneurial skills. This initiative will motivate young people to consider starting up their own business and increase awareness of entrepreneurial opportunities. All four college Principals from Coleg Gwent, Ystrad Mynach, Merthyr Tydfil and Coleg Morgannwg want this approach to be part of “experiential learning”.

Ruth Badger is going to be one of the judges at the Big Pitch Event. Ruth stared in the hit TV show “The Apprentice” week after week Ruth excelled in all tasks that she was set, she had great business acumen and ability. Ruth left the series after working for Sir Alan Sugar for 6 months in an Executive role. Ruth has gone on to achieve massive success s and has started her own consultancy company to give start up advice and business rescue. Ruth has started up an academy to support business and careers training.

    Candidate Business Decision:-

Last year the initiative inspired students to generate ideas to address a strategic business challenge in the region. FE students generated ideas to market a new visitor’s centre as part of the planned relocation of a major brewery in the Valleys. Nick Hewer from “The Apprentice” was the judge (2010) but this year (2011) Nick has agreed to be Patron of the Big Pitch.

This year the company is Rock UK Summit Centre (climbing centre). The company feels they have not marketed themselves well enough and inspires to gain greater potential to make sure that they are viable. FE students will need to find out what the product is, and how they are going to market it and how they are going to engage the local community.

To make the Big Pitch happen students will need to:-

    1. Have organised visits to the site

    2. Be trained in (training course provided) marketing skills and presentation skills

    10 Week Enterprise Course

Coleg Gwent are offering an Enterprise College Certificate. The handbook is a suggested guide for 10 hours of delivery, at levels 1 through to 3. The handbook is not meant to be a definitive guide, but provides suggestions to contextualise Enterprise into various curriculum programmes.

    The outline goal is that:-

Level 1 learners consider their own skills against those of an Entrepreneur, Level 2 learners cover the same but extend this to think of a business idea and Level 3 learners develop an outline Business Plan.

The main focus of the College Certificate is that all learners can be enterprising, it is not about inventing the next great idea but venturing into self-employment within their own chosen vocational field or considering HE provision to further their own ambitions.

Please contact Vanessa Janes-Evans (<font color="#0000ff">vanessa.janes@coleggwent.ac.uk) to register your students on this certificate.

Below are the Enterprise Pack and Resources that will support this certificate.
